Latin Achillea Filipendulina

Perennial - Zone 3

This hardy and showy perennial is a must for any garden. Yarrow is easy to grow, low-maintenance, fragrant, attracts butterflies and makes an excellent cut flower. The beautiful yellow blooms will bring life to your garden and home. This perennial variety will withstand most conditions you can throw at it. With its classic golden yellow flowers and tall stature, yarrow stands out in the crowd. Use it as an excellent backdrop to your annual flowers or perennial garden. Yarrow will flower from the beginning of July through to late September in most Canadian climates. Attracting butterflies with its fragrant and beautiful flowers is not yarrows only trick. It is well known to attract other carnivorous insects that will help protect your more susceptible flowers and vegetables. During the early stages, planting yarrow in loamy soil will increase its growth rate and protect the smaller seedlings. Like all seedlings, ensure that sufficient water gets to the roots to ensure survival. Once established though, yarrow can handle almost any soil conditions. It is suitable for rock gardens or xeriscaping because of its drought tolerance.

When starting yarrow from seed, spread on top layer of damp starter soil and in bright conditions. Use grow lamps or your sunniest window if starting indoors. Ensure that soil does not dry out during the germination process. Yarrow is known to be a slow germinator so be patient and use a heating mat to help speed the process up. Once seedlings are large enough, transplant outdoors or into larger containers if there is still hard frost conditions. Once frost risk has passed, yarrow can be moved outside into their forever home. Plant Yarrow in a sunny location for best results. This variety of Achillea is Zone 3.
