Latin Capsicum frutescens
The Tabasco Pepper is a small, fiery chili pepper famous for its role in making Tabasco sauce. These thin, upright-growing peppers start out green and ripen to a vibrant yellow-orange and then red, packing a spicy punch with 30,000–50,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU). The bushy, productive plants thrive in warm climates and can reach 2-4 feet tall, producing abundant peppers throughout the season. Known for their juicy, tangy heat, Tabasco peppers are perfect for hot sauces, salsas, and spicy dishes.
Growing Tabasco Peppers requires warm temperatures, full sun, and well-drained soil. Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost, then transplant outdoors after temperatures stay above 50°F (10°C) at night, spacing plants 18-24 inches apart. These bushy plants can grow 2-4 feet tall, so provide support if needed. Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid overwatering. Fertilize regularly for strong growth, and expect spicy, juicy peppers to mature in 80-90 days. Harvest when they turn red for the best flavour and heat!
