Latin Dianthus barbatus

Perennial - Zone 3

Sweet William is an heirloom plant that is native to Southern Europe and Asia. It has become a popular biennial in ornamental gardens throughout North America where it is often used in border plantings, rock gardens and cottage style gardens. Sweet William is known for its ability to attract birds, bees and butterflies making it a great candidate for naturalized gardens. If started early Sweet William may flower the first year. If seeded directly after last frost it will only flower the following year. Flowers are edible and have potential medicinal uses but there has been little research in regards to its medicinal use. Once flowering, deadhead regularly to promote new flower growth. Interestingly, in the Victorian language of flowers, Sweet William symbolizes gallantry.

Growing Sweet William from seed is very easy. Sow seeds into a light germination mixture 6-8 weeks before last frost. Water well and maintain moisture levels throughout the germination period. Once seedlings start growing thin or separate them as they do not like to be over-crowded. Ensure adequate air-circulation to prevent issues such as damp-off. It is entirely possible to directly sow Sweet William into your garden but it is likely that it won't flower the first season. Sweet William will re-seed if conditions are good.
