Latin citrullus lanatus
This heirloom variety was introduced in 1956 as a solution to shorter seasons due to its early maturing fruit. The Sugar Baby watermelon is known as a picnic box or icebox watermelon for it's cute size and portability. This popular variety produces high sugar content melons that are approximately 8-10lbs in weight and 7-8" in diameter. Not only are these one of the sweetest varieties of watermelon available they are also highly productive. This is a great option for smaller gardens with each vine will generally produce 2-3 melons each.
Watermelons need full sun, hot summers and will command a decent amount of space (even this variety) so plan accordingly. Like all melons, watermelons have male and female flowers on each plant and require bees for pollination. Avoid the use of insecticides to help bee populations in your garden. Also, planting of pollinators near your garden will help increase harvest of most fruits and vegetables. Start indoors 4 weeks before last frost. Matures in 80 days.
