Latin Lathyrus odoratus
The Royal White Sweet Pea is one of our favourite climbing varieties of sweet pea. Its vigorous habit and regal stature make this a great and fragrant addition to any yard. Bright and clear white flowers protrude from vine on strong stems. Plant them to crawl up trellis', fences, or even in hanging baskets. Also a great option for cut flowers. Plant alongside the Royal Scarlet variety for an added touch of beauty.
Sweet Peas grow readily from seed. This is a seed that is best directly sowed. Prepare bed so that the top 1-2" of soil are nice and loose. This is also a time to ensure that beds are free of any weeds from the previous season. Soak seeds overnight before planting to soften outer shell. Sow seeds a half inch deep and every 2-3 inches. Keep soil moist throughout the germination period (up to 20 days). Once established you can thin to one every 5-6 inches. Plant in full sun (some mid day shade is good in the hottest climate zones) for best results. Provide a trellis or something to climb immediately after germination as they will attach very early in their growth.
