Latin Physalis ixocarpa
Tomatillos originate and have been harvested in Mexico for centuries, long before Europeans arrived on its shores. The variety Rio Grande Tomatillo is THE tomatillo for salsa verde or chili verde. An heirloom variety that produces abundant fruit that is large and has high quality tangy flavour. This determinate variety has a bushy growth habit and requires no staking (although caging may be a good idea to hold up all the fruit!). Fruit is ready to pick when the husk has cracked open or fruit has recently fallen. If you have never tried salsa verde, make this the year you give it a try.
Growing tomatillos from seed is very easy. They are grown much like your tomatoes. Start them 8-10 weeks before last frost in a soilless growing mixture with bottom heat. Germination usually takes between 7 and 14 days. If you are not using a heating mat it may delay germination. Once all risk of frost has passed you can transplant them (after hardening off) into your desired growing space. Matures in approximately 85 days.
