Latin brassica napus

Red Kale is often called Siberian Kale for its high tolerance to cold. Like many of your leafy greens, it is best suited in the shoulder parts of the growing season. High heat will cause it to go to flower. Although it grows best in rich loamy soils, red kale will tolerate many soil conditions as long as decent drainage is provided. Siberian varieties are known to be milder in taste and also benefit from a higher tolerance to insects and disease.

Growing kale is very easy but should be done early in the season. It can be sowed early indoors and placed outside a couple weeks before last frost or seeded up to a month before last frost. It is also great as a fall crop that is planted in the later portions of the summer. Plant in direct sun. Harvest can begin as early as 25 days from germination.
