Latin ocimum basilicum 'Purpurascens'

This purple leaf basil is excellent for both its flavour and its magnificent colour. Opal Basil is used as a focal point in containers but has all the culinary uses of regular basil as well. Use in pasta dishes to add a little "pizazz" to your creations. This basil has a longer history than most know. It was first selected in the 1950's but not released until 1962 by Ferry-Morse Seed Company. It has since then become a popular and unique variety. It is now a stable open-pollinated heirloom variety.

Growing basil from seed is very easy. Use any loose, well drained soil mixture or potting mix. Bury seeds approximately 1/4" deep, cover and water in. Using bottom heat is recommended to speed up the germination process. Seeds should sprout in 5-10 days with bottom heat but could be longer if planting into the garden. Once basil has reached sufficient height to bear 6 true leaves, pinch off the top two to encourage a bushier habit. Harvest regularly to encourage a strong growth habit and to prevent flowering. Once flowering basil leaves will change flavour and may become slightly bitter. Basil enjoys warm temperatures and full sun for optimal performance. Matures in 80 days.
