Latin Tropaeolum majus
The Phoenix Nasturtium boasts beautifully unique, flame-like flower petals. The rich range of colors will light up any pot, flower bed or border. Let them cascade over the sides of raised beds or hanging baskets for a unique look not often found with nasturtiums. The saw-tooth flower petals is another unique characteristic of this old beauty. This variety was first introduced in the 1890's but fell off the map until recently. Much like its namesake, it rose from the ashes to bring life to our gardens.
Growing Nasturtiums from seed is very easy. They are quick growers so we recommend directly sowing them after last frost. However, if you need a head start or would just like an earlier flower they can be started 2-4 weeks early. Sow them into plant-able peat or coconut coir pots as they do not like to be transplanted. Once established nasturtiums are very easy to maintain. They thrive in poor soil conditions. Fertilizing is not required. Nasturtiums flowers and unripe seed pods are edible and can be added to salads for a nice peppery taste.
