This hardy, heirloom variety bears flavourful stocks that can be harvested reliably for up to 30 years. The Mary Washington variety is hardy from zones 3-10. This variety will produce seeds, which means it can spread. Dedicate a section of your garden or yard to it and it will give you many years of great tasting asparagus. It can be eaten raw, steamed, boiled, or grilled making it a versatile garden vegetable. Plant in full sun for best results.
Start indoors 10-12 weeks before last frost to get a head start on the season. Transplant only after the danger of frost has passed. You can also sow directly into highly fertile soil that is free of weeds after the risk of frost has ended. Avoid harvesting for the first 3 years. Matures in 2-3 years.
