Latin Tropaeolum majus
Alaska Mix Nasturtium is an heirloom flower that is native to South America, boasting deep red, yellow and orange edible flowers. The lime green leaves bear beautiful green white variegation that compliment the flowers nicely and are also edible. Peppery taste and colourful petals add a pizazz to any salad. This charming variety is great for container planting, flower beds or border planting. My personal favourite for window sill planters.
Nasturtium doesn't transplant well so it is highly recommended that you start them in their finished pots or direct seed them into their respective homes for the growing season. They are frost sensitive so ensure that all risk of frost has passed. Growth habit for this variety is fairly compact with a height of only 12" at maturity. Thrives in full sun, high heat and poor soil conditions. Starting nasturtium from seed is easy. The main consideration to make is that they like darkness during the germination period followed by brightness immediately afterwards. We soak our seeds for a few hours prior to planting to speed germination but this is not imperative for success. Once growing, Nasturtiums like poor to average soil. When it come to Nasturtiums, fertilizing will not improve growth. Plant in full sun for best results.
