Latin brassica oleracea 'Long Island Improved'
Long Island Improved Brussels Sprouts are an easy to grow addition to any garden. Introduced to the United States in the late 19th century, at one point this variety was the most important sprout crop in America. A single stalk of this variety can yield between 50-100 florets.
Brussels Sprouts need a long season so starting them indoors in most Canadian regions is a must. Avoid planting them in the hottest parts of your garden as they prefer a long cooler summer. They will survive a light frost and as a bonus any remaining florets will increase slightly in sugar content. Maturation period is up to 115 days so start early.
