Latin Brassica oleracea var. acephala
Lacinato Kale or Tuscan Kale is one of the most versatile of the kale family. It has a quicker cooking time and has slightly thinner leaves which means less massaging for fresh preparations. The taste is slightly sweeter and more delicate than curly kale. This variety has been grown in the Tuscany region for centuries and is a traditional ingredient in many dishes including minestrone and ribollita. Like other varieties of kale, it is usually blanched before being sautéed but can also be eaten raw. This variety is also highly ornamental which will add a touch of beauty to your garden.
Growing kale is easy and quick. You can easily have a tender shoot crop only a month after seeding and a fully mature leaf crop only four weeks after that. Plant in a location that receives full sun and is well drained for best results. Lacinato Kale can be direct seeded into your garden or transplanted after the risk of frost has passed. If you would like a head start start indoors 4 weeks before last frost. Thin or transplant them at least 12" between plants. This variety can get up to 3' tall and equally wide. If you plant too close together, don't worry, just eat the ones in between :) Like most lettuce crops, water evenly throughout the growth period for the highest quality leaves. Matures in 65 days.
