Latin alcea rosea nigra
Perennial - Zone 4
This stand-out biennial flower will give your garden the tall, dark contrast you are looking for. If you need something that stands out in your garden, this is the variety for you. Flowers can be up to 4" in diameter and adorn spikes that can be up to 7' tall. The Jet Black Hollyhock has a long history that dates back to the 1600's.
Growing hollyhock from seed is quite easy and can be accomplished both early indoors and directly into the garden. Soak seeds for 24 hours before planting to increase both rate and speed of germination. If starting indoors, begin 6-8 weeks before last frost by sowing into a soilless mixture. Do not bury the seeds, only lightly cover as they need light to germinate. Maintain moisture throughout the germination period. If starting outdoors, wait until soil has warmed and follow the same instructions as indoors. Hollyhock will reseed itself as long as conditions are good. Plant in full sun for best results.
