Latin alcea rosea
Perennial - Zone 3
These stately biennials are a sure fire way to bring a burst to your garden. Growing to a mature height of 6' tall the Chaters Double Hollyhock is great for the background of any perennial garden. These can also be used to create a living (and flowering) fence line. Hollyhock will reseed readily if the spot is appropriate and will become a permanent fixture in your garden. The two year life span of hollyhock means that they are best to be sown two consecutive years to have continuous blooms. The first year of growth will not produce flowers. Once flowering they will be loaded with beautiful double flowers that cannot go unnoticed.
Growing hollyhock from seed is quite easy in the right conditions. This biennial can be directly sown into the garden or started early indoors. If starting early, plant into a soilless medium in March and germinate at a temperature between 15-20 degrees Celsius. High temperatures will have a negative impact on germination rate. For this reason, if you are starting them directly in your garden start nice and early before temperatures start to rise too much. Space plants 30" apart for best results. Plant in full sun. Hardy to Zone 3.
