Hale's Best Jumbo Cantaloupe

Hale's Best Cantaloupe has been a gardening favourite for almost 100 years. Brought to market in 1924 by I.D. Hale, this variety is know for its excellent tasting large cantaloupe. Firm, Light orange flesh with excellent fragrance and taste. Hale's Best is also know for its smaller seed cavities, meaning more fruit per melon! The thick walls of this variety give it one of the best storage capacities of any heirloom variety. This variety also has a higher drought tolerance than other varieties of melon.

Plant in full sun and give enough space for plants to sprawl (rows should be about 6' apart). Start indoors about 4 weeks before the last frost and transplant into warm soil to prevent transplant shock. Water at a steady rate throughout the summer for best performance and best melon development. This is most important during pollination and when fruit is setting. Withholding water for the last week before harvest will concentrate sugars and give the best tasting melons. All cantaloupe are highly frost sensitive. Start indoors 4 weeks before frost. Matures in 85 days.
