Latin Ipomoea tricolor 'Grandpa Ott'
Grandpa Ott Morning Glory are a familiar sight with those that have grown morning glories before. The deep purple hue of their flowers with heart shaped leaves are one of the more common varieties out there. This is not without good reason though, they truly are stunning and are well deserving of their popularity. This highly vigorous variety will easily top 10' tall and 4' wide in a season if properly maintained. Grow in full sun and ensure they have enough water during the hottest months and you will be rewarded with a spectacular show. This is a variety that is hard to beat.
Growing morning glories from seed is very easy. Ensure that you soak the seeds overnight the day before planting. Sow morning glories directly to avoid transplant shock, just ensure that the risk of frost is gone. Morning glories can be started 4-6 weeks early if they are grown in plant-able coir pots or peat pots or if the plug is large enough that the roots are left undisturbed. Morning glory's are highly sensitive to frost so wait until all risk of frost has passed before planting outside.
