Latin origanum vulgare
Greek Oregano is the perfect compliment to Italian, Greek or Spanish cooking. There are many types of oregano out there but the Greek variety is considered the only 'true' variety for cooking and is the one most commonly seen gracing the shelves of supermarkets worldwide. Great for container gardening as I have personally found this herb to be perennial in zone 3 even though it is commonly said to be zone 5. If left in the garden, Greek Oregano is a great pollinator that will attract bees throughout it's flowering stages. In maturity, Greek Oregano will grow to a height of approximately 24" tall and 18" wide. Harvest regularly for continued refreshment.
Growing Oregano from seed is very easy. The main difficulty is handling the very small seeds. Do your best to sow evenly and cover lightly. Water thoroughly and maintain moisture levels throughout the germination period. Once established, oregano will re-seed in the garden if left to flower. Oregano can be successfully grown indoors in a sunny window for year round harvesting. Matures in 90 days. Start 2-3 weeks before last frost.
