Latin dianthus barbaratus
Perennial - Zone 3
Sweet William is a classic and showy addition to the flower garden. Flowering in its second year, the Giant Single Mix does not disappoint. Beautiful, bright and colourful flowers of pink, red, and rose cluster atop 10" stems. Flowers are nicely fragrant. Dianthus is tolerant of high heat and moderate soil conditions. Will self-seed but is not invasive.
Growing Dianthus from seed is very easy and can be done either directly into the garden or started indoors for a head start. If starting indoors, begin in a soilless mixture 6-8 weeks before last frost. Plant outside once the risk of frost has passed. If directly sowing, sow seeds a couple weeks before your last frost date. For either method, ensure that moisture is maintained during the germination period. Plant in full sun for best results.
