Once seen as a common weed, the Globe Thistle is making a come back to perennial gardens everywhere. But this is not the same species of thistle that you may remember as a child, that one is still considered a weed. This striking and hardy perennial is a beautiful and low maintenance addition to any garden. At it's early stages it will resemble the common thistle but its bloom is a striking and brilliant violet-blue. This flower is a pollinator favourite. It is also a great cut-flower option.
Growing Globe Thistle from seed is a very easy process and can be done either indoors or directly into your flower garden. If sowing indoors, start about 10 weeks before last frost. They need sufficient light so only attempt this if you have a sunny location or artificial lighting. Make sure that you harden off your plants before putting them into their permanent home. Alternatively you can grow these by directly sowing them into the garden. This is best done in early to mid fall but can also be done in spring (it will likely not flower that season). Plant in a full sun location. Plants do best without high levels of nutrients. The globe thistle is the perfect perennial for those tough to grow spots. Great for attracting all types of pollinators from bees to birds.
