Latin Nemophila maculata
This unique variety of Nemophila has a unique cup shaped flower that is the perfect contrast to the Penny Black variety. The five-petaled, pure white blossom center is contrasted by its vibrant blue tips. This short (6-9") and showy flower is a great option for borders, planters and the front row of flower beds. Five Spot Nemophila can handle full sun but does better in the cooler parts of the season. Too much heat and these will scorch. It will also tolerate some shade and is recommended where summers get very hot. The flowers will show profusely throughout the spring and into the summer. In most climate zones of Canada and if the seeds fall onto bare soil it will self-seed. Nemophila is a great option to attract pollinators to your garden.
Growing Nemophila from seed is quite easy and one that we recommend directly sowing. These seeds need light to germinate so barely cover the seeds when you do sow. They are tolerant of light frost so this one can be done mid-may even in the prairies. Germination should occur between 7 and 21 days. During this critical period maintain soil moisture. Thin to approximately 4" for best results but tighter spacing will be tolerated by this small species.
