Latin cucumis melo var. cantalupensis
The delicious variety was bred at Cornell University by Dr. Munger. It is a great tasting, nearly round melon with orange flesh. It is also an heirloom variety. When fully ripe you can expect an approximate weight of 2.5lbs and a diameter of about 6". This variety is known for its sugary, delicious (hence the name) flavor and aromatic smell. The Delicious variety has a known and robust resistance to powdery mildew. It has a thinner skin than most hybrid varieties but still seems to store well. This variety is high yielding and is also well adapted for northern gardens with slightly shorter growing seasons.
Plant in full sun and give enough space for plants to sprawl (rows should be about 6' apart). Start indoors about 4-5 weeks before the last frost and transplant into warm soil to prevent transplant shock. Water at a steady rate throughout the summer for best performance and best melon development. This is most important during pollination and when fruit is setting. Withholding water for the last week before harvest will concentrate sugars and give the best tasting melons. Matures in 75-90 days.
