Latin Matricaria recutita
This German variety of chamomile has a beautiful apple scent. The finely cut foliage produces single daisy-like flowers with white petals and a yellow center. The blossoms are used to make chamomile tea which is know for its relaxing effect. Beyond soothing the nervous system chamomile tea has been used for centuries as a sleep enhancing herb. Plant chamomile in a sunny location for optimum growth. This variety can be used as a tall ground cover but the German variety is not to be confused with the English ground cover, anthemis nobilis, that has finer leaves and a double flower. Both varieties are effective at reducing weed growth but the German variety is taller and is used primarily for herbal tea.
Growing chamomile from seed is very easy. Here at Pangea we directly sow ours into the garden to act as a pollinator and to harvest for tea. Chamomile can just as easily be grown in pots. Directly sow for best results as chamomile does not transplant well.
