Latin brassica oleracea var. italica
This versatile variety of broccoli is well known to produce uniform rounded heads in a variety of climates. Broccoli is best grown in the shoulder seasons to avoid the high heat of summer. Early spring and mid-summer plantings will give the best results. Protect young plants from flea beetles by using a row cover or diatomaceous earth.
Growing broccoli from seed is easy and should be started indoors in most areas of Canada. Start 4-6 weeks before last frost by sowing seeds 1/4" deep into a soilless mixture with 2-3 seeds per pot. Bottom heat will expedite germination. Thin to the strongest plant and grow on at room temperature or slightly below. After hardening off, space plants 16" apart in rows 18-36" apart. Plant in full sun for best results.
