Black Beauty Mini Watermelons are the perfect personal size watermelon and a great addition to your home garden. The Black Beauty watermelon delivers crisp, flavourful and juicy flesh with a hard, striped and dark outer rind. Expect the melons to mature to a size of 4-5lbs each. The plant is somewhat more compact in habit compared to full size watermelon plants so it is better suited for the urban garden. They still will command some space so plan accordingly. As with all monoecious plants (plants with male and female flowers on the same plant) ensuring pollination is critical in determining the size of your harvest. We always recommend adding some pollinator plants in your garden or the surrounding area. The issues of pollination have become increasingly apparent in recent years so protect your hard work and investment by adding a few easy to grow pollinators. Watermelon is an easy plant to grow from seed.
Start approximately 6 weeks before last frost in individual containers. Do not transplant as bareroots. Use a light growing medium and water-in so that the medium is wet throughout. Place in a full sun location. Seeds should germinate within a week. Once the danger of frost is gone, plant outside into your garden. Watermelons need full sun and hot summers to produce fruit. Cool weather can seriously prevent the setting of fruit. Watermelons will not ripen off the vine like most fruit does. These watermelons should mature in about 80 days so harvesting will be done in mid-August to mid-September for many Canadian climate zones.
