Latin lathyrus odoratus
The Bijou Sweet Pea mix is an excellent option for borders, containers and window boxes. This variety stays nice and compact which makes it excellent for these types of applications. The highly fragrant flowers make this a spectacular choice for a window box. Bearing flowers of white, pink, scarlet, lavender and blue this variety is a show stopper. The extraordinarily strong and straight stems make this an excellent choice for cut flowers as well.
Sweet Peas grow readily from seed. This is a seed that is best directly sowed. Prepare bed so that the top 1-2" of soil are nice and loose. This is also a time to ensure that beds are free of any weeds from the previous season. Soak seeds over night to soften outer shell. Sow seeds a half inch deep and every 2-3 inches. Keep soil moist throughout the germination period (up to 20 days). Once established you can thin to one every 5-6 inches. Plant in full sun (some mid day shade is good in the hottest climate zones) for best results.
