Latin Cucurbita pepo
The Dark Green Zucchini is one of the most popular heirloom varieties of squash. It's compact and bushy habit makes it great for gardeners with space restrictions. For those growing in city environments, this is one of the only zucchinis that you can grow successfully in a half barrel. It's small stature does not take away from its ability to produce fruit. This highly productive grower bears enough fruit to easily feed a family. This highly nutritious squash is great for baking cakes or muffins, roasting, sautéing or simply eating it raw. Best when harvested at 8-12" long.
Growing squash from seed is very easy. They germinate readily and are easy to maintain given a few crucial considerations. Dark Green Zucchini can be started indoors 2-3 weeks before last frost if desired but ensure that you use plant-able fibre pots as squash does not transplant well. If directly sowing (recommended), plant 4-6 seeds per hill and thin to the 3 most vigorous growers. Squash are a hot weather crop which means they will need lots of sun and high temperature summers for best production. They are highly sensitive to frost so protect them in the case of a late frost. It is also highly recommended to work in composted organic matter prior to planting. Matures in 45 days.
