Latin raphanus sativus acanthiformis
The watermelon variety of radish is an heirloom variety of the famous Japanese Daikon radish that originated in the north of China near Beijing. The watermelon radish has white skin and a beautiful and showy bright red flesh. The flavour is crisp with a mild sweetness that is known to be a little less 'biting' than a regular radish. Can be eaten raw, pickled or sliced over fresh salad.
This type of radish is a great late season addition which is usually harvested around first frost. Sow directly into garden once danger of frost has subsided if doing a spring crop. If doing a late season crop, count back 60 days or so from the first frost and direct sow. Ensure they are consistently well watered if doing so in mid-summer during the hotter weeks. Matures in 60 days.
