Latin Digitalis purpurea
Perennial - Zone 4
Excelsior Hybrids Foxglove is one of the most spectacular varieties of foxglove available. The stately upright stems are completely encircled by dramatic, and colourful trumpet flowers. The excelsior variety boasts colours of pink, red, purple, cream, primrose and white. The interior of each flower is uniquely spotted for added dramatic effect. This flower will attract all pollinators to your garden but watch closely as this is a favourite of hummingbirds. If conditions are acceptable, this eye catching biennial will self-seed and naturalize in your garden.
Growing foxglove from seed is easy but for first year flowers you will need to start very early. Starting indoors in February or early March will give you a chance at first year flowers. Start seeds in a soilless mixture and grow at temperatures in the mid-teens until hardening off and planting outside. Otherwise we recommend directly sowing into prepared beds in late spring. Choose a location that provides full sun or light shade and is sheltered from harsh winds. Hardy to Zone 4.
