Latin Helenium autumnale
Perennial - Zone 3
Sneezeweed is a North America native species that naturally grows in low lying meadows and near the edges of damp woodlands. Although the name could make a person with allergies run for the hills it is not a reference to it in that regard. The historical and long abandoned use of it as a snuff ingredient to drive out evil spirits is how that came to be. Now-a-days its a great addition to any perennial garden. Growing only 2-3' tall makes it a great middle height perennial. This Zone 3 perennial is also a great addition to your pollinator or butterfly gardens. Its late season flower boasts as many as 100 bright yellow flowers and will help give beneficial pollinators the food required before heading into the winter months.
Growing Sneezeweed from seed is very easy. The seeds require light during the germination period so avoid covering them when sowing. Water thoroughly and in approximately two weeks they should be sprouting. Maintain moisture levels and give full sun. Helenium needs full sun to thrive. Once large enough to handle, transplant into larger containers. Keep moisture levels high for helenium. Although they look very similar to blanket flower, they do not have the same tolerance to drought. Maintain a higher moisture level for Sneezeweed throughout its life and plant accordingly. Start the germination process 8-10 weeks before last frost. Plant outside once the danger of frost has passed.
