Latin echinacea purpurea

Perennial - Zone 3

This variation of the common purple coneflower displays deep pink 4-6" blooms that are sure to turn heads in the garden. This variety is also known to bloom in the first year providing you have started them prior to planting outside. Once established, echinacea is an incredibly drought tolerant perennial. Mature height is approximately 36" making it an excellent mid-level plant. Great as a cut flower as well.

Growing echinacea from seed is very easy and can be done either directly outside or started early indoors. A point to note is that better germination rates are usually achieved in an indoor setting. If starting indoors, sow into soilless medium in February for first year blooms. Harden off before planting outside once the danger of frost has subsided. If you are starting outdoors, directly sow in early spring or fall from the beginning of September to the end of October. Plant in full sun and in areas with good circulation.
