Latin Tropaeolum majus & T. minus
The Empress of India Nasturtium is a beautiful heirloom variety that commands attention in any garden or hanging basket. Covered with long-spurred orange to scarlet flowers this variety has a striking dark green-blue foliage that is great for borders and containers alike. This low growing variety is only 12-16" in height, making it a border favourite. The growing habit of this variety is strong and compact.
In general, Nasturtiums do not respond well to transplanting so we recommend sowing seeds directly into final planters even if starting indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost. If planting directly into the garden, sow seeds once the risk of frost has passed. Removing spent flowers of nasturtium will prolong flowering season. Spicy red flowers are edible and make an attractive addition to any salad or as a garnish. Can tolerate full sun to light shade. Starting Nasturtium from seed is easy. The only consideration to make is that they like darkness during the germination period followed by brightness immediately afterwards. Once growing, Nasturtiums like poor to average soil. When it come to Nasturtiums, fertilizing will not improve growth.
