Latin Mentha x piperita
Peppermint has a strong peppery taste with a cool sweet aftertaste. It is the most commonly used mint in confectionary goods. It is a wonderful herb for the new gardener or herb enthusiast alike. Mint is one of the easiest plants to grow. It can make even the proverbial 'black' thumb seem like a pro 'green' thumb. The history of peppermint is, like other varieties, hard to trace because of how prolific it will grow in the wild. To the best of our knowledge it originates in the Mediterranean region. It has a long history of being harvested for medicinal purposes and is to this day still admired in the holistic community. Try growing it for yourself and see how easy and fun it can be.
Growing mint from seed is incredibly easy. The one difficulty that many people encounter is the size of seed. Mint seeds are tiny. It is easy to pick up 100 seeds on your finger tip. Sometimes it is hard to believe that something so small can produce something that grows so prolifically. On that note, we do suggest that you grow mint in a container as opposed to your garden. It will quickly spread and take over any area that you grow it in. We suggest that you do your best to sprinkle 20-30 seeds on to a light soil mixture that you have pre-wet. Place your container in a warm and sunny location. Matures in 85 days.
