Latin lavendula stoechas
This highly sought after variety of lavender is also commonly known as 'topped lavender' or 'Spanish lavender'. This variety boasts beautiful, deep pink/purple flowers atop feathery blue/green base. It is known to have high concentrations of oils in its leaves giving it a very fragrant scent. Lavender stoechas is known to be showier than lavender angustifolia . This species though is less hardy than English lavender which makes it an annual in the majority of Canada.
Growing lavender from seed is moderately challenging. It can take up to 6 weeks to germinate. For a more consistent germination (albeit uneven) start indoors 8-12 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds on top of soil and barely cover as lavender needs light to germinate. Do not use a plastic covering and bottom water throughout the growing process. There is no need to use bottom heat for lavender seeds but keep them above 65 degrees Fahrenheit. If seeds seem to stagnate, reduce temperatures for two weeks in the refrigerator and re-try.
