Latin cortaderia selloana

Pampas Grass is native to the Andean region in South America, but well known in North America for its ornamental qualities. In some regions it is an invasive species due to its abilities to reproduce prolifically. The reason that this species reproduces so well is that it does not require pollination to develop fully mature seeds. For much of North America, especially the Canadian north, it does not have the hardiness to become invasive. Zone 7 is usually the requirement for winter survival of this species. This grass is highly ornamental and develops beautiful plumes (inflorescence) once maturity is reached. The highly attractive flowers are great for planter centers and annual planting beds. Once established there is virtually no care required for Pampas Grass. During severe drought watering may become necessary but this is hardly ever necessary. As with most drought tolerant plants, only in the infantile stage is moisture of utmost importance. Pampas grass is a great way to add showiness to your annual planters or beds. Ensure that this grass gets full sun for best performance.

Start this one early as it takes a long time to develop. We suggest at minimum 16 weeks before last frost to have the greatest show in summer. White Pampas grass requires 170 days minimum to bloom and 30 days to germinate, so if your last frost is in late May or early June, we recommend starting in February. For full height maturity 2-3 years is usually required. If your zone does not allow for overwintering you will need to pot your grass up and bring indoors for the winter months. Your Pink Pampas would be a show stopper though and would be the envy of all neighbours and many garden enthusiasts.
