Latin Ocimum × africanum
Lemon Basil grows much like regular basil but comes with sweet lemon aroma and taste. This variety has historically been primarily grown in northeastern Africa and southern Asia. It is widely used for culinary purposes, for things such as soups, stews, curries and stir-fried dishes. In Laos, it is the most popular form of basil grown. It is also immensely popular in Indonesian, Persian, Arabic and Thai cooking. Basil needs full sun to produce properly and like most basil, this variety is easily grown in containers, in the garden or indoors. Harvest early to improve growth habit and pick leaves at anytime afterwards to add a fresh taste to any dish. Ensure that you regularly harvest to postpone flowering as basil will lose its flavour or become bitter once flowering starts. Start seeds at anytime for year round harvest.
Growing basil from seed is very easy. Use any loose, well drained soil mixture or potting mix. Bury seeds approximately 1/4" deep, cover and water in. Using bottom heat is recommended to speed up the germination process. Seeds should sprout in 5-10 days with bottom heat but could be longer if planting into the garden. Once basil has reached sufficient height to bear 6 true leaves, pinch off the top two to encourage a bushier habit. Harvest regularly to encourage a strong growth habit and to prevent flowering. Once flowering basil leaves will change flavour and may become slightly bitter. Basil enjoys warm temperatures and full sun for optimal performance. Matures in 80 days.
