Latin Allium schoenoprasum
Chives are a popular herb for their mild onion-like flavour. They are part of the onion family but not harvested in the same way as bulbous onions. Great addition to many culinary dishes and not fussy growers. Even those who struggle to grow grass can grow this herb indoors or out.
Chives are perennial to Zone 3 so keep that in mind when you decide where to plant them. If growing indoors just make sure that they get sufficient light. We recommend 6 hours if possible. Starting chives from seed is very easy. If starting indoors use an indoor soil mix or a light potting mix. Lightly cover seeds with mixture and water well. Germination can be expected in 5-10 days. If you want a head start on the outdoor season, start 6 weeks before last frost. You can also easily directly sow chive seeds into your prepared garden. Again lightly cover with soil and water thoroughly. Wait until after last frost to start this process or transplant your already started plants. Matures in 80 days
