Latin Echinacea purpurea

Perennial - Zone 3

Growing approximately two feet tall the Purple Coneflower Echinacea is a great statement piece for the perennial garden. Native to the eastern United States, coneflower is a popular option in many flower gardens. It is equally popular with the most sought after pollinators, bees and butterflies. Light purple petals surround a rich plum center. This plant can withstand hot summers and are drought tolerant once fully established. Coneflower actually flowers best in a poor or lean soil medium. Limit the amount of fertilizer used with coneflower. Working in a small amount of manure is the best option. Near the end of the season as the blooms become drab and faded, cut back by a third. Coneflower is one of the easiest plants to take care of and will reward the gardener with beautiful blooms all summer long.

Growing coneflower from seed is very easy. Directly sow in fall from the beginning of September to the end of October. If starting indoors, sow into soilless medium in February for first year blooms. Harden off before planting outside once the danger of frost has subsided. Plant in full sun and in areas with good circulation.
