Latin Cucumis Melo var. flexuosus
This Oriental variety of cucumber is botanically a muskmelon but produces a fruit that looks and tastes like a cucumber. Mild and thin skinned the Armenian cucumber is an excellent choice. The one amazing thing about it, and probably the biggest complaint about true cucumbers, Armenian cucumbers are never bitter! This factor alone makes them a great choice for salads or sliced fresh. Once ripe, they are crisp, mildly sweet and oh so refreshing. These cucumbers are easy to grow, very productive and heat tolerant. Harvest the fruit when they are between 8" and 12".
An interesting note, this was likely the same species of "cucumber" grown year round for Emperor Tiberius in the first century AD. This summer, why not eat like an Emperor?
Armenian cucumbers can be grown vertically on trellises or if you have the space they can sprawl along the ground as well. In cooler climates, start indoors 3-4 weeks before last frost. Alternatively, if your climate has a longer season you can direct sow them into your garden once the threat of frost has subsided. For best results, grow in full sun and water regularly. The best fruits come from plants with consistent water supply. Matures in 65 days.
