Latin brassica oleracea
This heirloom, open-pollinated variety consistently delivers high quality, large sprouts on 2' high plants. Growing brussel sprouts requires a long season so for the majority of Canada that means starting them early is the only option. Brussels Sprouts will tolerate some frost (which actually improves sprouts). When cooked properly, Brussels sprouts will melt in your mouth.
Growing Brussels sprouts is relatively easy but requires an indoor start. Begin 4-6 weeks before last frost and use bottom heat to improve germination results. After germination remove from heat and grow at a lower temperature (16 degrees C). "Harden off" before planting outdoors. Brussels sprouts can be grown in pots as long as they are large enough (minimum 5 gallon). Matures in 100 days.
