Latin phaseolus vulgaris
The Black Turtle Bean is one of the most common beans used in Latin American cooking. Due to it's meaty texture it is often used in vegetarian dishes. There are just too many dishes to list that use the black turtle bean or its cooking water. This bean is harvested as a dried pod so they take longer in the garden. Many bean varieties are in the 50-60 days to harvest but the Black Turtle Bean needs 90-105 days. This heirloom variety grows with a bush are semi vining habit which means trellising is optional.
Growing beans from seed is very easy. They must be directly sowed into the garden so ensure that you have enough frost free days to grow this bean. Wait until soil temperatures are warm, ideally 70-80F before planting. If you have never sown beans or peas in the area that you are growing, using a garden inoculant can increase yields and germination success.
