Latin Ocimum Basilicum

Mammoth Basil is a lettuce leaf variety of basil that originates from Italy. The leaves are slightly crinkled and much larger than any other variety of sweet basil. The large leaves are fragrant and full of flavour, much like Genovese only with a slightly stronger anise flavour profile. Perfect for pasta's and pesto's alike. A great addition to any chef's repertoire. Mammoth Basil generally grows to a mature height of 18" but it should be harvested regularly to delay flowering and to improve growth habit. Once basil has flowered the flavour changes slightly and can sometimes be a little bitter.

Plant in full sun for best results. A great option for container planting. Growing basil from seed is very easy. Use any loose, well drained soil mixture or potting mix. Bury seeds approximately 1/4" deep, cover and water in. Using bottom heat is recommended to speed up the germination process. Seeds should sprout in 5-10 days with bottom heat but could be longer if planting into the garden. Once basil has reached sufficient height to bear 6 true leaves, pinch off the top two to encourage a bushier habit. Harvest regularly to encourage a strong growth habit and to prevent flowering. Once flowering basil leaves will change flavour and may become slightly bitter. Basil enjoys warm temperatures and full sun for optimal performance. Matures in 85 days.
