Latin Tithonia rotundifolia
Tithonia has become one of our favourite flowers here at Pangea. It has a few common names that you may have heard it called by, Mexican Sunflower and Mexican Torch. It's ability to withstand drought and high heat is unmatched. We directly sow ours without issue each year. Once blooming, Mexican Torch will surely delight you, your friends and your family. Even without deadheading ours continues to bloom all the way to frost. Tithonia will grow to a mature height of 4-6' tall so it is best used in the back row of your flower bed.
Growing Tithonia from seed is very easy. We recommend directly sowing them after last frost but if you do want a head start on the season, you can start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. Sow seeds only 1/8" deep as they need light to germinate. Maintain moisture throughout the germination period. If transplanting into the garden, wait until night temperatures are consistently above 10°C. Germination will occur in approximately 7-14 days.
