Snow Cloth Alyssum is a carefree, low growing prolific flowering annual. It grows very quickly which can help with empty spaces in both pots and flower gardens. It also acts as an excellent ground cover for weed suppression. Great for rock gardens and as a companion plant to pansies, sweet william and parsley. The honey scented flowers will attract many pollinators and beneficial insects to your garden. Ensure that your Alyssum is planted in well drained soil as soggy conditions will quickly cause root rot. Being a vigorous grower, shear back if rejuvenation is needed. Alyssum should be flowering within four weeks of any cutback. This annual will also reseed itself year after year.
Growing alyssum from seed is very easy. The seeds are small so an even sowing will be the greatest challenge. Sow seeds on top layer of soil as these seeds need light to germinate. Germination should occur within 1 to 2 weeks. It may take a little longer if you are directly sowing into prepared beds. Alyssum is one annual that can be sown before last frost but it will only survive light frost so be careful. Growing inside will give you better control of variables and improve germination rates. If you have started indoors, wait until after frost to transplant more advanced plants. Plant in full sun or partial shade.
