Latin Zinnia elegans
Candy Cane Zinnia boasts beautiful, double petaled, dahlia-like striped flowers in assorted colours. These unique flowers are also sometimes called Peppermint Stick Zinnias. They have been a popular addition to many gardens for decades and were first listed for sale by Vaughans in their 1951 catalogue. This variety will grow to a mature height of approximately 18" and deliver strong sturdy stems that make for elegant cut flowers. Cut frequently and/or deadhead for new blooms. Candy Cane Zinnias make a great statement piece in pots, along borders or as a front member of your flower garden.
Zinnias are very easy to grow from seed. They are one of the best choices for beginner gardeners. We recommend sowing directly into final beds or pots as zinnias don't transplant well. They can be started early as long as you minimize root disturbance by starting them into plant-able coir pots or use peat pellets. Start as early as 4-6 weeks before last frost for early blooms. Once the danger of frost is gone, plant in full sun and space 12" apart. If you live in an area that has higher humidity during the summer months, avoid overhead watering as zinnias can be susceptible to powdery mildew.
