Latin achillea millifolium
Perennial - Zone 3
White Yarrow/ Achillea is a naturalized Canadian staple. This adaptable zone 3 perennial is great for hard to grow areas that are often too hot or have poor soil. This adaptability makes it tolerant of both wet and dry soils alike. The fern-like foliage is topped by beautiful white flowers that are highly attractive to pollinators. Yarrow grows via rhizomes and seed so it can spread if uninhibited in a flower bed. Makes a great meadow flower.
Yarrow is very easy to grow and can be started indoors or directly sowed. If starting indoors, begin in mid-February or early March. Plant into a soilless mixture and germinate without a heating mat at approximately room temperature (70 degrees Fahrenheit). Germination will occur in 7-15 days. Grow in full sun or under lights before hardening off and planting outside. Directly sow seeds in early spring once ground is workable.
