Latin Eucalyptus cinerea

Silver Dollar Eucalyptus is a beautiful house plant for both its look and fragrance. Native to Australia, this variety of eucalyptus has blue-grey round leaves that resemble a silver dollar when young. It is often used in spas for its fragrance but the cut flowers can be used as decorative arrangements as well. The dried stems will last for quite a long time and give off fragrance for extended periods. This variety of eucalyptus grows at a fast rate (24" per year indoors) if well taken care of. You can bring this plant outside during the summer but be careful to not allow it to receive frost. Eucalyptus is not cold hardy. Will need a full sun location for optimal growth and survival.

Growing eucalyptus from seed is quite easy. Lightly cover the seeds with a light germination mixture and water thoroughly. Use bottom heat and cover with either plastic or humidity dome. Once seeds begin to sprout, remove humidity dome immediately as eucalyptus is prone to damping off. Provide airflow and sunlight to help prevent this. Once plants are 4-5" tall transplant into a larger containers. Growing eucalyptus in a light and well draining mixture will give the best results. Place in a sunny window and enjoy. Once plants have grown for a year you can harvest branches as long as you don't remove more than 30% of the leaf mass at once.
