Latin lycium barbarum
Perennial - Zone 5
Packed with nutrients, goji berries are a highly sought after specialty fruit throughout the world. Once established (approximately 3 years) this self pollinating shrub can produce up to 6 lbs of fruit. Although able to withstand some winter temperatures, we would not recommend this plant for anyone below a Zone 5. Mulching is good practice for all your shrubs but in particular for this one. Once developed, goji berry shrubs will produce tons of fruit over their lifetime and can reach up to 10' in ideal conditions.
Starting goji from seed is moderately challenging. Planting into individual pots, sow seeds 1/4" deep into a soilless mixture and maintain moisture throughout the germination process. Give bright light to aid in germination. Start this process no later than 6 weeks before last frost. Harden off plants before transplanting outdoors.
