Latin solanum lycopersicum 'San Marzano'
San Marzano Tomatoes are an Italian favourite! Plum sized (or larger) tomatoes grow on large indeterminate plants. Compared to the Roma tomato, San Marzano's are know to be thinner and more pointed in size. They are also sweeter, more flavourful and less acidic. Fruit has excellent flavour and is great for eating fresh or making into paste. Interestingly, San Marzano's predate the Roma and can trace its roots back to the 1770's. The genetics are very stable in this variety and will breed true generation to generation regardless of open-pollination.
Tomatoes are best grown in full sun, and in hot climate areas. Being an indeterminate variety staking is a must. Heavy duty cages are recommended due to the large amount of fruit that it will bear. To avoid blossom end rot, ensure consistency of watering. Although calcium deficiency is possible (and does cause blossom end rot), inconsistent watering is the most common cause of blossom end rot. Start indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost for earlier fruit. Matures in 75 days. Heirloom variety.
