Latin gaillardia x grandiflora
Perennial - Zone 4
This award winning variety is prized for its annual-like flowering habit. Blooms are early, intense, colourful and last throughout the summer. The Arizona variety is known to have deep crimson petals with yellow fringes. This perennial is also reliably hardy to Zone 4. Growing to a mature height of 12-15" makes this a great front row option for your perennial garden. Gaillardia is heat and drought tolerant as well as being deer and rabbit resistant. Great as a cut flower for inside your home.
Growing Gaillardia from seed is very easy and can be done indoors or directly sowed into your garden. The seeds will germinate more reliably with light so only lightly cover them when you sow. If growing indoors, start 8-10 weeks before last frost and ensure that you harden them off before placing outside. If directly sowing, sow in springtime when soil temperatures have risen above 15 degrees C. Plant in full sun and well drained soil for best results.
